I am a grandmother paddling alone over 2,500 miles from Maine to Guatemala. Along the way I will be:
- telling the story of the children who live in the Guatemala City garbage dump community
- honoring their entrepreneurial mothers
- talking about the success of the Safe Passage model school and
- raising funds for additional grades for the school.

Kayak's First Accidental Roll!

The kayak on the cart we are modifying, at Saturday Night Cove.
So who is the winner of the pool on when Deb will first dump in the new kayak?  Not so fast folks...
I was hauling the kayak up from the landing, along a rough stony beach, pulling it along parallel to the hill.  The cart was not working well and I was having to pull really hard.  Then suddenly, the kayak rolled over, landing upside down, wheels in the air, and rudder smushed to the side.  Yikes.  Just like me, the kayak is only expert at doing the first half of a roll.  But thanks to Joey (the CLC wizard) the boat was sturdy enough to emerge undamaged, rudder and all.

We are back to the drawing board on the kayak cart.  Bigger wheels, and a better system of lashing.  To be continued...

  1. Deb, I took some heavy wire, a clamp, and a rubber bicycle grip and with the help of some guys at the local hardware, formulated a way to hold onto the cart and maintain control of the boat when covering rough terrain and steep embankments. It works pretty well. Measure where you want to stabilize your cart, and make enough wire to draw it up on the ends with the grip over it, tie the ends off each side of your cart, clamp it where the two sides come together. It travels well and takes up no more room than the cart. Paddle well!
